mishimasaiko-dandelion  Foley session

Last Monday we went to a sound recording studio located in Paris. There, we worked with a great foley artist called Xavier Drouault. He created all the sounds we needed for the film : from Mishima's footsteps to dragonflies' wings.

How did he work ? He just used everyday life items and mixed them all together in order to get believable sounds.

As an example, larvas' bodies are a mix of a rubber item bended on itself, some yoghurt mixed with a spoon and fingers tapping on the back of the hand (feet on the floor). Saiko's rose opening is also a surprising mix : a brocoli and a rubber glove.

It was such an interesting journey through our senses !Sound brings us a new vision of the film which comes even more to life.

French TV channel France 3 came and filmed us at work. They will make a documentary about Mishimasaiko with a focus on sound design. We will let you know as soon as it is broadcasted and available.

Here are some pictures we took that day (we worked in almost complete darkness) :

Early in the morning, before work starts. We checked if everything was OK (film preview, screens, mixing tools, etc...)

France 3 television team then arrived and made some tests too. On this picture, you can see many luggages : they content all the items Xavier will use to create sounds.

Xavier is being interviewed for the documentary.

Xavier is listening to the sounds he created for the butterfly.

Xavier spent his day running from one luggage to the other in order to find the items he needed.

Xavier is creating Mishima's footsteps sounds. Many items are available in a mixing studio, even a car !

Xavier is having a break. He is holding "Mishima's coat" in his hand.

Xavier and his strange and beautiful dance : he is creating the base sounds for Mishima's clothes.

Xavier is now working on Mishima's burning skin sounds : he uses a wicker basket and polystyrene.

Next week I will write about dubbing sessions that we made the day after.
